The small, unincorporated community of Capitola, FL is located in eastern Leon County, due east of Tallahassee. Originally called the town of Mays, Capitola is known for its southern landscapes and numerous farms.
Through most of the first half of the 20th century, the Florida Central Railroad served Capitola, where the large Evergreen Hills cotton plantation once thrived. The Capitola Baptist Church was established in 1926, and the town’s namesake, Capitola DuPree, is buried in the Capitola Cemetery. Today, the heart of town centers around the Capitola Joy Mart, a small convenience store. Capitola also houses a volunteer fire department.
